Computer Diagnostics

OBD-II Scanning

Also called computer scan

OBD scanning connects a tool to the diagnostic port and reads what the control units have stored: current faults, pending faults not yet confirmed, and permanent codes that cannot simply be cleared. We record the freeze frame data alongside each code. It is the quickest way to see what the car is reporting. A scan on its own does not identify the faulty part, and it cannot see mechanical wear such as worn brakes or suspension that no sensor monitors.

Signs you need this

  • A warning light is on and you want to know what it means
  • The car feels different and you want to check for stored faults
  • You are buying or selling the car
  • A fault was cleared elsewhere and you want to see if it has returned
  • You want a record of the car's fault history before a repair

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Connection and scan of all modules that your car supports
  • Stored, pending and permanent codes recorded before anything is cleared
  • Freeze frame data captured for each fault
  • Readiness monitor status checked
  • Plain language explanation of what each code means
  • Written copy of the results for your records

How we do it

  1. Connect and identify

The tool is connected and the vehicle identified, so the correct protocol and module list are used for your model.

  2. Scan every module

All available modules are scanned, not just the engine, because faults often appear in more than one system.

  3. Record before clearing

Codes and freeze frame data are saved first, since clearing them destroys the information needed to diagnose.

  4. Explain the results

Each code is explained in plain terms, with what it rules in, what it rules out, and what testing would follow.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
