Engine Assembly Replacement
Also called half engine change
Engine assembly replacement swaps the lower part of the engine, the block with its crankshaft, pistons and bearings, while your existing cylinder head, manifolds, ancillaries and wiring are transferred across. It is used when the bottom end has failed but the rest of the engine is sound, and can be quicker and cheaper than a full overhaul. It only makes sense if the head and ancillaries are genuinely serviceable, so those are inspected and reported before the work is agreed.
Signs you need this
- Bearing knock or a seized crankshaft confirmed by inspection
- A hole or crack in the block, or a thrown connecting rod
- Severe scoring in the bores found on a borescope inspection
- Overhaul quoted as uneconomic compared with a sound replacement block
- Metal debris throughout the oil system
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Inspection of the replacement assembly before fitting, with you shown the condition
- Transfer of your cylinder head, manifolds and ancillaries after inspection
- New gaskets, seals, belts and fluids as part of the build
- Oil pump, pickup and cooling passages checked and cleaned
- Assembly torqued to specification and timing set correctly
- Run-up, leak check, road test and running-in advice
How we do it
Confirm the lower end failed
We verify that the block is the problem and that the head and ancillaries are worth keeping before recommending this route.
Source and inspect
The replacement assembly is inspected for bore condition, turning freedom and evidence of overheating before it is accepted.
Remove and transfer
The old engine comes out, and your head and ancillaries are cleaned, checked and transferred to the replacement block.
Install and time
The assembly is fitted with new gaskets and seals, timing is set to specification, and fluids are filled fresh.
Test and run in
The engine is run up, checked for leaks and pressure, road tested, and you receive clear running-in instructions.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
