Engine Overhaul
Also called engine rebuild
An engine overhaul means stripping the engine to its parts, measuring bores, crankshaft and head, machining what can be saved, replacing what cannot, and rebuilding it to specification. It is the right answer for genuine internal wear: low compression across cylinders, heavy oil burning, bearing knock. It is a long job and the final cost depends on what measurement reveals once it is open, so we agree a diagnosis first and quote the machining separately as findings come in.
Signs you need this
- Low or uneven compression confirmed across several cylinders
- Heavy blue smoke and high oil consumption
- Deep knocking from the bottom of the engine under load
- Metal particles found in the oil or the sump
- The engine has overheated severely and lost power afterwards
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Full strip with parts labelled and kept for your inspection
- Measurement of bores, crankshaft journals, head flatness and valve seats
- Machining where required: reboring, crank grinding, head skimming, valve seat cutting
- New gaskets, bearings, seals, rings and any part outside tolerance
- Rebuild to specified clearances and torque figures
- Controlled running-in procedure and an early oil change after the rebuild
How we do it
Test before stripping
Compression, leakage and oil pressure figures are recorded so the decision to overhaul rests on measurements.
Strip and inspect
The engine is removed and dismantled, with each component inspected and photographed for wear, scoring and damage.
Measure and machine
Parts are measured against specification, and machining is quoted to you before it is sent out and carried out.
Rebuild to specification
Assembly uses new bearings, rings, seals and gaskets, with clearances checked and every fastener torqued in sequence.
Run in and recheck
The engine is started, warmed carefully, checked for leaks and pressure, and you get running-in instructions and an early oil change.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
