Exhaust Repair
Also called silencer or exhaust pipe repair
Exhaust repair means fixing the section that has failed rather than replacing the whole line. Rust holes, split joints, broken hangers and pipes damaged by high speed bumps are cut out and welded or replaced. You usually notice it as a sudden roar, a rattle underneath, or a fume smell at idle. It will not fix a blocked catalytic converter, an internal engine noise, or a check engine light caused by sensor faults elsewhere.
Signs you need this
- Car has become noticeably louder, especially when accelerating
- Rattling or knocking from underneath over bumps
- Exhaust smell inside the cabin at idle or in slow traffic
- A hissing or puffing sound that rises with engine speed
- Black sooty marks visible around a joint underneath
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Raising the car and tracing the leak along the full exhaust line
- Cutting out the failed section and welding in new pipe or a repair sleeve
- Replacing perished rubber hangers and corroded clamps and gaskets
- Checking the remaining sections for thin metal that will fail next
- Running the engine cold and warm to confirm the leak is sealed
How we do it
Listen and locate
We run the engine with the car raised and trace the leak by sound and by feeling for escaping gas along each joint.
Assess the metal
The surrounding pipe is tapped and probed to see how much is still sound, so the repair is not made into thin rust.
Cut and weld
The failed section is cut out and new pipe welded in, with gaskets, clamps and hangers replaced where they are corroded.
Recheck under load
We rev the engine and block the tailpipe briefly to pressurise the system and confirm nothing is leaking from the repair.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
