Silencer Replacement
Also called muffler change
The silencer is the box at the back of the exhaust that reduces noise. Once its internal baffles rust away or the shell holes through, the car becomes loud and no patch will hold for long. Replacement fits a new unit with fresh clamps, gaskets and hangers. It will not quieten noise coming from further forward in the exhaust, and it does not change engine power or fuel consumption.

- Deep booming or roaring noise from the rear of the car
- Loose internal rattle when you tap the silencer box
- Visible rust holes or soot streaks on the silencer shell
- Noise that got worse suddenly rather than gradually
- Exhaust tip hanging lower than it used to
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Confirming the noise is the silencer and not a pipe or manifold leak
- Cutting off or unbolting the old unit without damaging the sound pipe
- Fitting the replacement silencer with new gaskets and clamps
- Replacing rubber mountings so the new unit hangs at the right height
- Road test to check for rattles against the floor or spare wheel well

Confirm the source
We check the whole line first, because a leaking joint ahead of the silencer produces very similar noise and costs far less to fix.
Remove the old unit
Seized bolts are cut rather than forced, protecting the pipe the new silencer has to seal against.
Fit and align
The new silencer is fitted with fresh gaskets and hangers and aligned so it clears the body at every point.
Test and inspect
We warm the car up, listen for leaks at the new joint, and check clearance over bumps on a short road test.
