Fuse & Relay Replacement

Also called fuse blown

A fuse blows to protect a circuit, and a relay is the switch that lets a small signal control a large current. Replacing a blown fuse is easy, but a fuse that blows again means there is a short circuit, and fitting a larger fuse to stop it blowing is how wiring fires start. We replace the fuse or relay and then find why it failed. Simply replacing them is not a repair when the underlying wiring fault is still present.

Signs you need this

  • One or more electrical items have stopped working together
  • A fuse blows again shortly after being replaced
  • A relay clicks rapidly or does not click at all
  • A burning smell or discoloured fuse holder in the fuse box
  • Electrical faults that began after an accessory was installed

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Correct rating fuse fitted, never a higher rating to stop it blowing
  • Fuse boxes inspected for heat damage, corrosion and loose terminals
  • Relay tested by substitution or by measuring coil and contact operation
  • Circuit tested for a short to earth where a fuse has blown repeatedly
  • Affected circuit function tested after the repair
  • Advice if an aftermarket accessory is overloading the circuit

How we do it

  1. Identify the circuit

The fuse chart for your model tells us exactly which components share the circuit, which narrows the fault quickly.

  2. Inspect the box

The fuse box is checked for heat damage, corrosion and loose terminals, which cause faults on their own.

  3. Test the relay

The relay is tested by swapping with an identical one or by measuring its coil and contacts under power.

  4. Find why it blew

If the fuse blew rather than simply aged, the circuit is tested for a short before a new fuse goes in.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
