Horn & Wiper Motor Repair

Also called wiper not working

The horn and wipers share the same kind of fault list: a failed switch or clock spring in the steering column, a blown fuse or relay, a corroded earth, a seized linkage, or a worn motor. Wipers that park in the wrong place usually have a linkage or park switch fault rather than a dead motor. Both are safety items and are checked in any inspection. This work does not cover wiper blades wearing out, which is a simple replacement.

Signs you need this

  • The horn does not sound, or sounds weak and uneven
  • Wipers move slowly, stop partway, or stop in the middle of the screen
  • A humming from the wiper motor with no blade movement
  • Intermittent wipe setting does not work but normal speeds do
  • Washer pump runs but no fluid reaches the screen

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Fuse, relay and switch tested before the motor is suspected
  • Horn earth and mounting checked, a frequent cause of a dead horn
  • Wiper linkage checked for seizure, and pivots cleaned and lubricated
  • Motor current draw measured to identify a dragging or failing motor
  • Park position and intermittent function tested after repair
  • Washer pump, jets and hoses checked and cleared where blocked

How we do it

  1. Check the simple items

Fuse, relay and earth are tested first, as these account for a large share of horn and wiper failures.

  2. Test the switch circuit

The column switch and, for the horn, the clock spring are tested, since both wear with steering movement.

  3. Check mechanical load

Wiper linkage pivots are checked for seizure, because a stiff linkage burns out an otherwise healthy motor.

  4. Repair the cause

The failed switch, relay, earth, linkage or motor is repaired or replaced, and the linkage is lubricated.

  5. Test all functions

Horn, all wiper speeds, the intermittent setting, park position and the washers are tested together before the car is handed back.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
