AC Compressor Repair & Replacement

Also called AC compressor change

The compressor is the pump that moves refrigerant around the air conditioning system. It fails through seized bearings, a burnt-out clutch coil, internal wear or loss of lubricating oil. Repair may mean replacing the clutch and pulley alone; heavier failure needs the whole unit. If a compressor has broken up internally, the pipes, dryer and expansion valve must be flushed or replaced too, or the new compressor will fail the same way.

Signs you need this

  • Loud rattle or grinding from the engine bay when AC is switched on
  • Compressor clutch does not engage at all
  • Belt squeals or has been thrown off
  • No cooling at all although the system has gas
  • Metal particles found in the refrigerant circuit during service

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Diagnosis confirming the compressor rather than a control or electrical fault
  • Refrigerant recovery before the system is opened
  • Clutch, pulley or complete compressor replacement as the failure requires
  • Receiver dryer replacement, which is mandatory once the system is opened
  • System flush where debris from a failed compressor is present
  • Vacuum, recharge by weight and performance test

How we do it

  1. Confirm the failure

Electrical supply, clutch gap, pressures and pulley condition are checked so a cheap fault is not replaced expensively.

  2. Recover and open

Refrigerant is recovered properly and the compressor is removed with the belt and mounting inspected.

  3. Clean the circuit

Where the old compressor shed metal, lines and condenser are flushed and the dryer and expansion valve replaced.

  4. Fit and charge

The new unit is fitted with the correct oil charge, the system is vacuumed, then refilled to the specified weight.

  5. Run and verify

Vent temperature, pressures, clutch operation and fan behaviour are checked over an extended idle and road test.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
