Also called car heater not working
Cabin heat comes from engine coolant passing through a small radiator called the heater core inside the dashboard, with flaps directing the warm air. Cold air in winter can mean low coolant, a stuck thermostat, a blocked core, or a flap or cable that has stopped moving. The work ranges from a simple flush or cable adjustment to removing the dashboard, so the fault is identified before any duration or cost is agreed.
Signs you need this
- Air from the vents stays cold in winter however long you drive
- Heat on one side of the cabin but not the other
- Sweet smell or fogging on the inside of the windscreen
- Damp or wet carpet in the front passenger footwell
- Coolant level dropping with no leak visible under the bonnet
- Clicking from behind the dashboard when temperature is adjusted
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

How we do it
Check the coolant side
Level, condition and thermostat operation are checked first, since low coolant and a stuck thermostat are common causes.
Feel the core pipes
Both heater hoses are compared at temperature; one hot and one cold points to a blocked core.
Test the air side
Blend flaps, cables and actuators are operated to confirm the air is actually being directed across the core.
Flush or replace
A blocked core is flushed where possible; a leaking one is replaced, which requires dashboard removal on most cars.
