Clutch Bearing Replacement
Also called clutch bearing noise
The release bearing, also called the throw-out bearing, pushes the pressure plate fingers when you press the clutch pedal. When it wears you hear a rumble or squeal that appears as the pedal goes down and disappears when you lift off. It is an inexpensive part but reaching it requires the gearbox to come off, so it is normally replaced with the clutch plate and pressure plate. Replacing the bearing alone leaves the rest of a worn clutch in place.
Signs you need this
- A rumbling or whirring noise that starts when you press the clutch pedal
- A squeal that appears only with the pedal partly down
- Noise that disappears completely when your foot is off the pedal
- Vibration felt through the clutch pedal
- A heavy pedal combined with a growling noise
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Noise test with the pedal up and down to confirm the bearing is the source
- Gearbox removal and inspection of the bearing, guide tube and fork
- New release bearing of the correct type, concentric or conventional
- Guide sleeve and release fork pivot cleaned and greased correctly
- Clutch plate and pressure plate inspected and replaced where due
- Road test confirming the noise is gone across the pedal travel
How we do it
Confirm with the pedal
Listening with the pedal up, part down and fully down separates a release bearing from a gearbox input bearing.
Remove the gearbox
The gearbox is separated so the bearing, fork, guide tube and whole clutch assembly can be inspected.
Inspect the whole clutch
Since the box is already off, plate and pressure plate wear are assessed and quoted before reassembly.
Fit and grease correctly
The new bearing is fitted with the guide sleeve and fork pivot cleaned and greased with the correct lubricant.
Road test the pedal
The car is driven and the pedal worked through its full travel to confirm the noise has gone at every point.
