Pressure Plate Replacement

Also called clutch cover change

The pressure plate, sometimes called the clutch cover, clamps the clutch plate against the flywheel. Its diaphragm spring fingers wear where the release bearing contacts them, and the clamping force drops or becomes uneven. That gives a heavy or notchy pedal, slipping even with a good friction plate, or a clutch that will not fully release. Because the gearbox has to come off either way, it is normally replaced together with the plate and release bearing rather than alone.

Signs you need this

  • The clutch pedal has become noticeably heavy or uneven
  • Gears grind on engagement because the clutch does not release fully
  • Slipping continues after a new clutch plate was fitted
  • Visible blue heat marks or deep wear grooves on the diaphragm fingers
  • A rattling or knocking from the bell housing at idle

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Inspection of diaphragm finger wear, heat damage and clamping surface condition
  • New pressure plate matched to your clutch plate and flywheel
  • Bolts tightened evenly in sequence to avoid distorting the cover
  • Release bearing and plate inspected and replaced where due
  • Flywheel face checked for scoring, cracking and flatness
  • Clutch operation set and road tested under load

How we do it

  1. Test pedal and release

Pedal effort and whether gears select cleanly with the pedal down tell us if the cover is at fault.

  2. Separate the gearbox

The gearbox is removed so the cover, plate, bearing and flywheel can all be inspected together.

  3. Assess the whole assembly

Diaphragm wear, heat damage and flywheel condition are shown to you before parts are ordered.

  4. Fit evenly and torque

The new cover is tightened in a diagonal sequence to specification so it is not distorted on the flywheel.

  5. Set and road test

Release travel is set, then a road test confirms a normal pedal, clean gear selection and no slipping.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
