Clutch Plate Replacement
Also called clutch plate change
The clutch plate is the friction disc squeezed between the engine flywheel and the pressure plate. Its lining wears away, and it can also be ruined by oil from a leaking crankshaft or gearbox seal. Symptoms are slipping under load, a burning smell, and judder when moving off. Replacing it means removing the gearbox, so the pressure plate, release bearing and flywheel are inspected at the same time and we advise if they also need work.
Signs you need this
- Engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate to match, especially uphill
- A burning smell after pulling away or after a hill climb
- Judder or shuddering as the clutch takes up
- The biting point has moved very high or very low
- Oil visible around the bell housing joint
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Road test to confirm slipping rather than an engine or gearbox fault
- Gearbox removal and inspection of the plate, pressure plate and flywheel
- New clutch plate of the correct size and spline count
- Plate centred on assembly so the gearbox refits without damaging it
- Crankshaft and gearbox input seals checked for the oil leak that ruined the old plate
- Clutch operation adjusted or bled, then road tested under load
How we do it
Confirm the clutch slips
A load test in a high gear confirms the clutch is slipping rather than the gearbox or engine causing the symptom.
Remove the gearbox
The gearbox is separated from the engine so the clutch assembly and flywheel face can be inspected properly.
Inspect the full assembly
Plate, pressure plate, bearing and flywheel are examined, and we show you what has worn and what caused it.
Fit and centre the plate
The new plate is fitted the correct way round and centred with an alignment tool before the gearbox goes back.
Adjust and road test
The clutch is adjusted or bled, then tested under load on a hill to confirm the slipping and judder are gone.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
Book clutch plate replacement
Fill this in and a person will call you back to confirm the time and the price. Only your name and one way to reach you are required.
You send this
Takes a minute. No payment, no obligation.
We call you
To confirm the car, the time and the location.
Tell us the car and the symptom
We will arrange a mechanic at your location, or a slot at the nearest workshop. No payment until the price is agreed.
