Engine Noise Diagnosis
Also called engine awaaz
Engine noise diagnosis identifies what is actually making the sound. Ticking usually comes from valve clearances or injectors, rattling on start-up from a timing chain tensioner, whining from a pulley bearing or pump, and a deep knock from the bottom end. We listen with a stethoscope at defined points, compare hot and cold, and use scan data where relevant. This is a diagnosis, not a repair. The outcome is a named cause, a recommended repair and a price.
Signs you need this
- Ticking from the top of the engine that rises with engine speed
- A rattle for a few seconds after a cold start
- A deep knock that gets louder under load or up a hill
- Whining or squealing from the front of the engine
- A new noise that appeared after a recent repair or service
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Noise heard by the technician with you present, so we are chasing the right sound
- Cold start and hot running comparison, since many noises only appear in one state
- Stethoscope listening at defined points on the engine and accessories
- Belt-off test where accessories are suspected
- Oil pressure check and scan data where a bottom end or timing fault is suspected
- Written finding with the recommended repair and its cost
How we do it
Hear it with you
We ask you to reproduce the noise so we diagnose the sound that worries you rather than an unrelated one.
Compare cold and hot
The engine is heard from cold and again at temperature, because clearances and oil pressure change what you hear.
Isolate the area
A stethoscope, and removing the accessory belt where safe, narrow the noise to a specific part of the engine.
Support with data
Oil pressure, fault codes and camshaft timing figures are checked where the noise suggests timing or bottom end wear.
Report the finding
You get the named cause, how certain we are, and the repair options, without work starting until you agree.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
