Engine Replacement
Also called engine change
Engine replacement fits a complete replacement engine in place of one that is beyond economic repair. The result depends almost entirely on the donor engine, so we inspect it for compression, oil condition and signs of overheating before it is accepted. The job includes transferring or replacing ancillaries, fitting new mounts where needed, fresh fluids and a full timing and cooling check. An engine change does not renew the gearbox, clutch, cooling system or wiring, and those should be assessed at the same time.
Signs you need this
- The existing engine has seized or suffered major internal damage
- Overhaul has been quoted as costing more than a sound replacement engine
- The block is cracked or the crankshaft is beyond grinding limits
- The engine has been run without oil or coolant and lost compression
- Repeated major repairs on the same engine within a short period
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Inspection of the replacement engine, including a compression test before fitting
- Removal of the old engine with wiring, pipes and looms labelled
- Transfer or replacement of ancillaries, with worn items identified to you
- New engine mounts, belts, filters and fluids as part of the build
- Cooling system flushed and refilled, and the clutch inspected while access is open
- Post-fitting scan, road test and running-in advice
How we do it
Confirm replacement is right
We show you the evidence that repair is uneconomic, and give you the cost of both routes before you decide.
Inspect the donor engine
The replacement is compression tested and inspected for oil condition, overheating and prior repairs before we accept it.
Remove and transfer
The old engine comes out with connections labelled, and ancillaries are cleaned and checked before being transferred.
Install with new wear parts
Mounts, belts, filters and fluids are renewed during fitting, because refitting old ones costs more later.
Commission and road test
The engine is started, scanned, checked for leaks and pressure, road tested, and you get running-in instructions.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
