Cooling System

Engine Overheating Repair

Also called car heating up

Overheating has several possible causes and guessing between them is expensive. This job works through them in order: coolant level and condition, leaks under pressure, thermostat operation, fan and radiator airflow, water pump circulation, and finally combustion gases in the coolant, which indicates a head gasket. The outcome is a named cause and a quote. Do not keep driving a hot engine, because a cheap repair becomes a major one within a few kilometres.

Signs you need this

  • Temperature gauge reads high or the warning light comes on
  • Steam or a sweet smell from the bonnet
  • Coolant boiling or pushing out of the expansion tank
  • Heater blows cold while the engine runs hot
  • White smoke from the exhaust with coolant loss
  • Engine loses power and feels rough when hot

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Coolant level, mix and condition check
  • Cooling system pressure test for internal and external leaks
  • Thermostat operation and hose temperature comparison
  • Fan, fan circuit and radiator airflow check
  • Combustion gas test on the coolant where a head gasket is suspected
  • Written findings with the cause and a quote for the repair

How we do it

  1. Check coolant first

Level, mix ratio and condition are checked cold, since low or contaminated coolant explains many overheating complaints.

  2. Pressure test the system

The system is pressurised cold to find external leaks and to see whether it holds pressure at all.

  3. Test flow and airflow

Thermostat opening, water pump circulation, radiator blockage and fan operation are checked while the engine warms.

  4. Rule out the gasket

A combustion gas test on the coolant shows whether exhaust gas is entering the cooling system through a failed gasket.

  5. Report the cause

You are given the measured findings, the likely cause and a quote before any repair begins.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
