Stabilizer Link Replacement

Also called sway bar link change

The stabilizer bar, also called an anti-roll bar, limits body lean in corners, and short links connect it to each side of the suspension. Those links carry small ball joints that wear quickly on broken roads, producing a rattle or knock over bumps that is often mistaken for something more serious. Replacement is a straightforward job. It reduces body roll and removes the knock, but it will not fix worn shocks or bushes.

Signs you need this

  • Light rattling knock over small bumps and broken road
  • Noise louder on one side than the other
  • Clonk when the wheel drops into a pothole
  • Body leans more than usual in corners
  • Visible torn boot or loose joint on the link

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Play check on both links with the suspension loaded
  • Stabilizer bar mounting bush inspection
  • Links replaced in pairs on the same axle
  • Correct fasteners fitted and torqued
  • Check of nearby bushes and joints while the corner is accessible
  • Road test over rough surface

How we do it

  1. Confirm the link

Each link is gripped and moved with the suspension loaded so a worn joint can be felt clearly.

  2. Check the bar bushes

The rubber bushes holding the stabilizer bar to the body are inspected, since they knock in the same way.

  3. Replace both sides

Links are replaced as a pair so the bar is loaded evenly and the second one does not fail soon after.

  4. Road test the fix

The car is driven over the same rough surface to confirm the rattle has actually gone.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
