ABS Diagnosis & Repair
Also called ABS light on
ABS stops the wheels locking under hard braking by releasing and reapplying pressure many times a second. When the warning light is on, ABS is switched off but your normal brakes still work. The usual causes are a damaged wheel speed sensor, a dirty or broken sensor ring, wiring damage or, less often, the hydraulic unit itself. Because the repair depends entirely on what the codes and live data show, this starts as diagnosis.
Signs you need this
- ABS warning light stays on after starting
- Brake pedal pulses at low speed when it should not
- ABS light appears only after driving a certain distance
- Speedometer drops out along with the ABS warning
- Wheels lock under hard braking with no ABS pulsing
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Fault codes read from the ABS module, not just the engine
- Live wheel speed data compared across all four wheels while driving
- Sensor, sensor ring and wiring inspection at each affected wheel
- Sensor or wiring replacement where that is the cause
- Hydraulic unit and pump testing where sensors are not at fault
- Codes cleared and a road test to confirm the light stays off
How we do it
Read the codes
The ABS module is scanned directly, since a generic engine scan often shows nothing at all.
Compare live data
Wheel speed readings from all four sensors are watched while driving to find the one dropping out.
Inspect the wheel end
The sensor, its ring and the wiring loom are checked for dirt, damage, corrosion and chafing near the suspension.
Repair and confirm
The faulty sensor, ring or wiring is replaced, codes are cleared and the car is road tested.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
