Brake Drum & Shoe Service

Also called rear brake shoe work

Most common cars here, including the Mehran, Alto and Cultus, use drum brakes at the rear. Shoes press outward against the inside of a drum, and the assembly collects dust, the self-adjuster seizes and the wheel cylinder can leak. This service strips, cleans, measures and rebuilds the rear brakes. It will not fix a front brake problem, and it does not correct a soft pedal caused by air or a failing master cylinder.

Signs you need this

  • Rear brakes feel weak and the front does all the work
  • Handbrake needs many clicks to hold the car
  • Scraping or rubbing from the rear wheels
  • Fluid seeping at the back of a rear wheel or on the tyre inner wall
  • Car pulls to one side under braking
  • Rear wheels lock too easily on loose surfaces

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Drum removal, cleaning and measurement of the internal diameter
  • Brake shoe lining thickness measurement
  • Wheel cylinder inspection for leakage and seizure
  • Return springs, retainers and adjuster cleaned or replaced
  • Shoe replacement in axle sets where worn
  • Adjustment of shoe clearance and handbrake travel afterwards

How we do it

  1. Strip and clean

Drums come off and the assembly is cleaned so worn parts can be seen rather than guessed at.

  2. Measure the parts

Lining thickness and the drum's internal diameter are measured against limits before anything is replaced.

  3. Check the cylinder

The wheel cylinder boots are pulled back to look for fluid leakage and the pistons are checked for free movement.

  4. Rebuild and adjust

Shoes, springs and adjusters are refitted with the correct lubricants, then clearance and handbrake travel are set.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
