Master Cylinder Repair
Also called brake pump repair
The master cylinder is the pump your brake pedal pushes on, turning pedal effort into hydraulic pressure at all four wheels. When its internal seals wear, the pedal sinks slowly under steady foot pressure even though no fluid is visibly leaking. Repair means a seal kit or a replacement unit, followed by a full bleed of the system. It does not fix a soft pedal caused by worn pads, air in the lines or a leaking caliper.
Signs you need this
- Pedal slowly sinks to the floor when held under steady pressure
- Brakes feel fine at first press but fade on a second
- Fluid level drops with no leak visible at any wheel
- Fluid staining or damp on the bulkhead behind the reservoir
- Pedal feels different from one day to the next
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Pedal test to distinguish a master cylinder fault from air or a leak
- Inspection of lines, calipers and wheel cylinders for external leakage
- Master cylinder repair kit or complete unit replacement
- Reservoir cleaned and fresh fluid of the correct specification
- Full four-wheel bleed of the brake system
- Road test with a pedal hold check before handover
How we do it
Confirm the fault
A held-pedal test with the lines isolated separates an internally leaking master cylinder from air or a wheel-end leak.
Check for external leaks
All lines, hoses, calipers and cylinders are inspected first, since an external leak is a cheaper repair.
Repair or replace
A seal kit is fitted where the bore is in good condition; a scored or corroded unit is replaced.
Bleed and test
The whole system is bled in the correct sequence and the car is road tested with repeated hard stops.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
