Brake Caliper Repair

Also called seized brake caliper

The caliper holds the pads and pushes them onto the disc using a hydraulic piston. Dust and moisture make the piston or the slide pins seize, so the brake stays partly applied. That wheel then runs hot, the pad wears out fast, fuel consumption rises and the car pulls under braking. This job rebuilds or replaces the caliper. It does not correct a pull caused by suspension or alignment problems rather than the brakes.

Signs you need this

  • One wheel much hotter than the others after a drive
  • Car pulls to one side when braking
  • Burning smell from one wheel
  • Pad on one side worn far more than the other
  • Brake stays partly on and the car feels held back
  • Fluid leaking around the caliper piston boot

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Temperature and drag comparison between wheels to confirm the fault
  • Caliper removal, piston and bore inspection
  • Seal kit, piston and slide pin replacement where the body is sound
  • Complete caliper replacement where the bore is corroded
  • New pads on the affected axle if the old ones wore unevenly
  • Brake bleed and road test after refitting

How we do it

  1. Confirm the drag

Wheel temperatures and free rotation are compared side to side so the right caliper is identified.

  2. Strip and inspect

The caliper is removed and the piston, bore, seals and slide pins are examined for corrosion and scoring.

  3. Rebuild or replace

A sound body is rebuilt with a seal and piston kit; a pitted or corroded bore means a replacement unit.

  4. Bleed and road test

The circuit is bled, pad wear on the axle is equalised with new pads, and the pull is rechecked.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
