Fuel Filter Replacement
Also called petrol filter change
The fuel filter catches rust, sediment and water picked up from fuel and from the tank itself. When it blocks, the engine starves under load: the car hesitates on hills, loses power at speed, or cuts out and restarts. Replacing it restores flow and protects the injectors and fuel pump. It does not fix a worn fuel pump, a leaking injector, or a fault in the ignition system, and if contamination is heavy the tank may need cleaning as well.
Signs you need this
- Hesitation or power loss when climbing or overtaking
- The engine cuts out at steady speed and then restarts
- Long cranking before the engine fires
- Jerking at motorway speed that eases when you lift off
- Fuel pump noise that is louder than usual
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Fuel system pressure safely released before any line is opened
- Old filter removed and inspected for rust, sludge and water
- New filter of the correct type fitted with fresh seals or clips
- Fuel lines and connections checked for perishing and leaks
- Running leak check and a road test under load
How we do it
Confirm a fuel restriction
We check fuel pressure and live data where possible, so we are not replacing a filter to chase an ignition fault.
Depressurise the system
Pressure is released and the work area is kept clear of any ignition source before lines are disconnected.
Replace the filter
The old filter comes out, its contents are inspected as evidence, and the new one goes in with correct flow direction.
Prime and leak check
The system is primed, every joint is checked dry, and the engine is run and inspected before the car moves.
Road test under load
A drive including a hill confirms the hesitation is gone, which a workshop idle test alone would not prove.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.

Fill this in and a person will call you back to confirm the time and the price. Only your name and one way to reach you are required.
You send this
Takes a minute. No payment, no obligation.
We call you
To confirm the car, the time and the location.
Tell us the car and the symptom
