Engine Tune-Up
Also called engine tuning
A tune-up restores the basics an engine needs to burn fuel cleanly: fresh spark plugs, clean air and fuel filters, a check of ignition coils and leads, throttle body cleaning and a check that idle and mixture are where they should be. It helps a car that has become rough, sluggish or thirsty through normal wear. It will not fix a mechanical fault such as low compression, a leaking head gasket or a failing sensor, though it usually makes those faults easier to identify.
Signs you need this
- Engine feels rough at idle or the car shakes at traffic signals
- Noticeably weaker pulling power, especially on an incline
- Fuel consumption has crept up with no change in your driving
- Hesitation or a stumble when you press the accelerator
- Harder starting than usual, particularly on cold mornings
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Spark plug inspection and replacement, gapped to the maker's figure
- Air filter and fuel filter replacement where due
- Ignition coil and lead check for cracks, tracking and weak spark
- Throttle body and idle air passage cleaning
- Live data check of idle speed, fuel trims and sensor readings where the car supports it
- Road test before and after
How we do it
Confirm the complaint
A road test and a scan tell us whether this is normal wear or a specific fault that a tune-up will not cure.
Inspect ignition parts
Plugs come out and are read for wear, fouling and heat colour, which also shows how each cylinder is running.
Replace and clean
New plugs and due filters are fitted, and the throttle body and idle passages are cleaned of carbon and oil mist.
Set idle and check trims
Idle speed is checked against specification and fuel trims are read to confirm the mixture has come back into range.
Road test and report
A second drive confirms the change, and we tell you plainly if a deeper fault is still present.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.

Fill this in and a person will call you back to confirm the time and the price. Only your name and one way to reach you are required.
You send this
Takes a minute. No payment, no obligation.
We call you
To confirm the car, the time and the location.
Tell us the car and the symptom
We will arrange a mechanic at your location, or a slot at the nearest workshop. No payment until the price is agreed.
