Puncture Repair
Also called puncture or flat tyre repair
A proper puncture repair removes the tyre from the rim, inspects the inside for hidden damage, and seals the hole from within with a combined plug and patch. Only punctures in the central tread area can be repaired safely. Sidewall cuts, shoulder holes, and tyres that were driven on while flat must be replaced. An outside-only plug done at the roadside is a temporary measure to get you home, not a repair.
Signs you need this
- One tyre repeatedly lower than the others
- Nail, screw or metal fragment visible in the tread
- Tyre pressure warning light coming on
- Hissing sound from the tyre when parked
- Car pulling to one side at low speed
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Locating the puncture with water or soap solution
- Removing the tyre from the rim and inspecting the inner liner
- Deciding whether the damage is in the repairable tread area
- Cleaning and sealing the hole with a plug and patch from inside
- Refitting, rebalancing the wheel and setting the correct pressure
How we do it
Find the leak
The tyre is inflated and checked with solution, since the object you can see is not always the only hole.
Remove and inspect
The tyre comes off the rim so the inside can be checked for the scuffing that shows it was driven flat.
Repair from inside
The hole is cleaned and a plug and patch fitted from within, sealing both the injury and the inner liner.
Refit and balance
The wheel is rebalanced, pressure set and nuts torqued, because a repair changes the balance of the wheel slightly.
