The wheel bearing lets the wheel spin smoothly on the hub. When it wears it produces a humming or growling noise that changes as you turn the steering at speed, and in bad cases play you can feel by rocking the wheel. Replacement fits a new bearing or hub assembly. It will not cure noise from worn tyres, which sounds similar, so we confirm the source before removing anything.

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

- Road test to identify which corner the noise comes from
- Checking for play by rocking the wheel and spinning it by hand
- Ruling out tyre wear noise, which is often mistaken for a bearing
- Pressing out the old bearing and fitting the new bearing or hub assembly
- Setting the correct torque on the hub nut and road testing again
How we do it
Road test the noise
Swerving gently side to side loads each side in turn, which usually identifies the failing corner quickly.
Check on the lift
The wheel is rocked and spun by hand to feel for play and roughness, and tyre wear is ruled out.
Replace the bearing
The hub is removed and the bearing pressed out and renewed, or the complete hub assembly fitted where that is the design.
Torque and verify
The hub nut is torqued to specification, and we repeat the road test to confirm the noise has gone.
