Fuel Pump Replacement
Also called petrol pump change
The fuel pump, usually mounted inside the tank, delivers petrol at a set pressure to the engine. As it wears, pressure falls, so the car struggles under load, hesitates on a hill, cuts out when hot, or refuses to start. Replacement restores fuel delivery, and it is done only after pressure and volume testing, because a blocked filter, a failing relay or a wiring fault can produce exactly the same symptoms.
Signs you need this
- Engine cranks but will not start
- Loss of power climbing a hill or when accelerating hard
- Car cuts out when hot and restarts once cooled
- Whining noise from the fuel tank area
- Long cranking before the engine catches
- Hesitation that gets worse as the tank runs low
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Fuel pressure and volume test before any part is replaced
- Relay, fuse and wiring checks at the pump connector
- Pump or complete in-tank module replacement
- Tank strainer and seal renewal with the module out
- Fuel filter replacement where it is a separate item
- Pressure retest and road test under load
How we do it
Test the pressure
A gauge on the fuel rail shows running pressure and whether it holds after switch-off, pointing at the pump or a leak.
Check the supply
Relay, fuse, connector and voltage at the pump are checked, since an electrical fault imitates a failed pump.
Replace the pump
The in-tank module is removed, the strainer and seal renewed, and the correct pump fitted with care against sparks.
Retest and drive
Pressure is measured again and the car is road tested under load to confirm the hesitation has gone.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
Book fuel pump replacement
Fill this in and a person will call you back to confirm the time and the price. Only your name and one way to reach you are required.
You send this
Takes a minute. No payment, no obligation.
We call you
To confirm the car, the time and the location.
Tell us the car and the symptom
We will arrange a mechanic at your location, or a slot at the nearest workshop. No payment until the price is agreed.
