Automatic Transmission Repair
Also called auto gear repair
Automatic transmission repair covers the hydraulic, electronic and mechanical faults that cause slipping, harsh or delayed shifts, or a gearbox dropping into limp mode with only one gear available. Many of these are fixable without opening the unit: fluid and filter, a solenoid, a valve body, a wiring fault or a speed sensor. We confirm which before quoting. If the clutch packs inside have burnt, that is an overhaul, and clean fluid will not reverse it.
Signs you need this
- The engine revs but the car does not accelerate as it should
- A hard jolt or a long delay when changing gear
- The car is stuck in one gear or will not shift up
- Transmission warning light or a gear indicator flashing
- Burnt smell or very dark fluid on the dipstick
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Fluid level and condition checked at the correct temperature
- Transmission fault codes and live data read during a road test
- Line pressure tested where the symptom points at hydraulics
- Solenoid, valve body, sensor and wiring checks before any internal work
- Repair carried out with correct specification fluid and new seals
- Adaptation reset where the transmission control unit requires it
How we do it
Check fluid properly
Level and condition are checked at the specified temperature, because a cold or hot reading gives a false result.
Scan and road test
Codes and live data such as slip ratio and solenoid duty are recorded on the road where the fault appears.
Separate control from mechanical
Pressure tests and solenoid checks show whether the problem is electronic control or worn internal clutch packs.
Quote the real scope
You are told whether this is a service, a valve body repair or an overhaul, with the cost of each before work starts.
Repair and relearn
The repair is carried out, correct fluid filled, adaptations reset, and a road test confirms shift quality has returned.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
