Gearbox Overhaul
Also called gear box rebuild
A gearbox overhaul means removing the unit, stripping it completely, inspecting and measuring every gear, bearing, shaft and synchroniser, then rebuilding with new parts where wear is beyond limits. It is appropriate when several components have worn together rather than one part failing. The final cost cannot be known until the box is open, so we strip first, show you the worn parts, and quote before ordering. Overhaul does not renew the clutch, which should be replaced at the same time.
Signs you need this
- Noise present in several gears rather than only one
- Grinding into more than one gear even with a healthy clutch
- A gear that will no longer engage at all
- Heavy metal contamination found in the drained gear oil
- A previous localised repair that has not lasted
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Gearbox removed, stripped and every component inspected and photographed
- Measurement of shafts, bearings, endfloat and synchroniser wear
- Quote presented with the worn parts shown before anything is ordered
- New bearings, seals, synchronisers and gears as required
- Preload and endfloat set to specification on reassembly
- Clutch and mounts inspected while the gearbox is out
How we do it
Confirm the gearbox failed
Clutch, linkage, mounts and drive shafts are checked first so an overhaul is not carried out unnecessarily.
Remove and strip
The gearbox comes out and is dismantled fully, with every component cleaned and laid out in order.
Measure and quote
Wear is measured against specification, you are shown the failed parts, and the rebuild cost is agreed before ordering.
Rebuild to specification
New bearings, seals and gears are fitted with preload and endfloat set, and the casing sealing faces cleaned.
Refit and road test
The unit is refitted with correct oil, and a road test covers every gear, reverse, and a check for leaks.
How we work
The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.
Diagnosis before quote
We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.
The price is agreed first
You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.
Parts you can check
We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.
Old parts returned
Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
