Manual Gearbox Repair

Also called gear box repair

Manual gearbox repair addresses faults inside the box and in the linkage that operates it: worn synchroniser rings that let a gear grind, worn selector forks that make a gear jump out, noisy bearings, and leaking shaft seals. Some complaints turn out to be clutch or linkage problems rather than gearbox problems, which is far cheaper, so we confirm the source first. Repair restores the mechanism; it does not compensate for a worn clutch left in place.

Signs you need this

  • Grinding or crunching when changing into a particular gear
  • A gear jumps out on its own, often on the overrun
  • Whining or rumbling that changes with gear selection
  • The lever is stiff, vague, or will not enter a gear
  • Oil leaking from the gearbox casing or drive shaft seal

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Road test to identify which gears and which conditions produce the fault
  • Clutch operation and gear linkage checked before the box is removed
  • Gearbox removal, strip and inspection with worn parts shown to you
  • Replacement of worn synchronisers, bearings, forks and seals
  • Correct specification gear oil filled to the right level
  • Clutch condition assessed while the gearbox is out

How we do it

  1. Road test the fault

We record which gears grind or jump, under what load, and whether the problem is present when cold or hot.

  2. Check the cheap causes

Clutch travel, linkage wear and oil level are checked first, because each of these can mimic internal gearbox failure.

  3. Remove and strip

The gearbox is removed and dismantled, with each worn synchroniser, bearing and fork laid out for you to see.

  4. Rebuild with new parts

Worn components are replaced, endfloat and preload are set, and new seals are fitted throughout on reassembly.

  5. Refill and road test

Correct grade oil is filled to level, then a road test checks every gear in both directions and for leaks.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
