Gearbox Replacement
Also called gear box change
Gearbox replacement fits a complete replacement unit instead of rebuilding yours. It can be the sensible route when the casing is cracked, damage is extensive, or a sound unit is available for less than the rebuild. The outcome depends on the replacement unit, so it is inspected for free rotation, noise, oil condition and damage before it is accepted. Replacing the gearbox does not renew the clutch, drive shafts or mounts, and those are checked while access is open.
What the job includes
- Inspection of the replacement unit before it is accepted or fitted
- Removal of the old gearbox with linkages and wiring labelled
- Clutch, release bearing, mounts and drive shaft seals inspected while out
- New gearbox oil of the correct specification filled to level
- Linkage adjusted and gear selection checked before the car is lowered
- Road test through all gears including reverse, plus a leak check
Signs you need this
- Overhaul has been quoted as more expensive than a sound replacement unit
- The gearbox casing is cracked or the mounting points are damaged
- The gearbox has seized or a gear has broken up internally
- Extensive internal damage found once the unit was opened
- Parts for an overhaul are not available for your model

Inspect the donor unit
The replacement is turned through by hand, checked for noise, play, leaks and damage before we accept it.
Remove the old unit
The gearbox is removed with linkages, sensors and wiring labelled so nothing is guessed at on reassembly.
Renew wear items
Clutch, release bearing, seals and mounts are assessed and replaced while access is open, since refitting later costs more.
Fit, adjust, road test
The unit is fitted, filled with correct oil, the linkage adjusted, and every gear tested on the road.
