Transmission Oil Change

Also called gear oil change

Transmission oil lubricates gears, bearings and synchronisers, and in an automatic it also transmits drive and cools the unit. It breaks down with heat and collects metal wear particles. Changing it on schedule is the simplest way to protect gearbox life. It is maintenance, not a repair: if the gearbox already grinds, whines or slips, fresh oil may quieten it briefly but the worn parts inside will still need attention.

Signs you need this

  • The service interval by kilometres or months has been reached
  • Gear changes have become notchy or slightly harder than before
  • The oil on the dipstick is dark, thin or smells burnt
  • The car has been used heavily in stop-start traffic or for towing
  • You have no record of the gearbox oil ever being changed

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Confirmation of the correct oil specification and quantity for your model
  • Old oil drained and inspected for metal particles and burnt smell
  • Drain plug magnet cleaned and the washer replaced
  • Refill to the correct level and, for automatics, at the specified temperature
  • Leak check around the plugs, seals and pan after refilling
  • Note of the odometer reading and the next due interval

How we do it

  1. Verify the specification

We confirm the exact oil type and quantity for your model, since manual, automatic and CVT oils are not interchangeable.

  2. Drain and inspect

Old oil is drained warm and inspected for metal glitter and smell, which tells us about internal condition.

  3. Clean and refill

The magnetic plug is cleaned, a new washer fitted, and fresh oil filled to the correct level.

  4. Check level and leaks

The level is set the way your model requires, then plugs and seals are checked dry after a short run.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
