Axle & CV Joint Replacement

Also called axle boot clicking

CV joints let the drive shaft transmit power while the wheels steer and move over bumps. They are sealed in rubber boots packed with grease. When a boot splits, grease escapes, dust and water get in, and the joint wears until it clicks on tight turns. Our broken and speed-humped roads split boots often. Catching it early can mean a boot and grease only; once the joint clicks, the joint or the shaft needs replacing, and a boot alone will not silence it.

Signs you need this

  • Clicking or knocking when turning at low speed, especially on full lock
  • Grease thrown onto the inside of the wheel or the wheel arch
  • A split or missing rubber boot on the drive shaft
  • Vibration under acceleration that eases when you lift off
  • A clunk when moving off or changing between forward and reverse

Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.

What the job includes

  • Inspection of both drive shafts, inner and outer boots and joints
  • Assessment of whether a boot and re-grease will do, or the joint is already worn
  • Replacement of the CV joint or complete drive shaft as required
  • New boots, clamps and correct grease quantity
  • Hub nut torqued to specification and split pin or locking method renewed
  • Road test on full lock in both directions to confirm the clicking is gone

How we do it

  1. Road test on lock

Slow full lock circles in both directions reveal which side clicks and whether the outer joint has worn.

  2. Inspect the boots

Both shafts are checked on the ramp for split boots, thrown grease and play in the inner and outer joints.

  3. Decide boot or joint

If the boot has just split and the joint is still tight, a boot and re-grease may be enough, and we say so.

  4. Replace and torque

The joint or shaft is replaced, the hub nut is torqued to specification, and the locking method is renewed.

  5. Road test and recheck

A drive on full lock and under acceleration confirms the noise and vibration are gone, and the boot is checked seated.

How we work

The same on every job, which is why we can write it down.

  • Diagnosis before quote

We find the fault first. A price given over the phone for a noise nobody has heard is a guess.

  • The price is agreed first

You approve the work and the cost before a spanner is picked up. Extra work means another call.

  • Parts you can check

We tell you whether a part is genuine, OEM, aftermarket or used, and what each one costs.

  • Old parts returned

Ask and we will hand back whatever we replaced. It is the simplest proof that the job was done.
