Rust Repair
Also called rust removal and patch work
Rust repair removes corroded metal rather than covering it. Surface rust is cut back, treated and sealed; rust that has eaten through is cut out and a new section welded in. Common spots here are wheel arches, sill edges, door bottoms and boot floors, usually where water sits or drain holes are blocked. If rust started from behind the panel, it will return unless the cause is addressed, and we tell you that honestly.
Signs you need this
- Paint bubbling along a wheel arch, sill or door bottom
- Brown staining running down from a seam
- Soft or flaking metal when pressed
- Holes visible from underneath the car
- Damp carpet in the footwell or boot
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
What the job includes
- Probing the area to find how far the corrosion actually extends
- Cutting out perforated metal and welding in a new section where needed
- Treating and sealing the inner face and clearing blocked drain holes
- Primer, colour matched paint and blending into the surrounding panel
- Underbody sealing of the repaired area where appropriate
How we do it
Find the true extent
We probe and open up the area, because bubbled paint almost always hides corrosion larger than the visible mark.
Cut back to sound metal
Perforated sections are cut out entirely, since treating rusted metal that is already through only delays the repair.
Weld and seal
New metal is welded in, seams sealed, the inner face treated and drain holes cleared so water stops collecting.
Prime, paint and seal
The area is primed, painted to the car's code, blended into the panel and underbody sealed where it is exposed.
