Transmission Diagnosis
Also called gear problem checking
Transmission diagnosis establishes what is actually wrong before anyone removes a gearbox. We check fluid level and condition, read transmission fault codes and live data, road test to reproduce the complaint, and check the parts outside the gearbox that commonly cause the same symptoms: clutch, mounts, drive shafts and linkage. The result is a written finding and a quote. It is an investigation, not a repair, and it often saves the cost of an unnecessary overhaul.
What the job includes
- Fluid level and condition checked at the correct temperature
- Transmission fault codes and freeze frame data read and recorded
- Road test with live data covering the conditions where the fault appears
- External causes checked: mounts, clutch, drive shafts, linkage and engine running
- Line pressure or stall testing where the symptom calls for it
- Written finding with the evidence and a separate repair quote
Signs you need this
- Slipping, jerking or delayed gear changes
- A transmission or check engine warning light
- Noise, vibration or clunking that changes with gear selection
- The car has gone into limp mode with limited gears
- You have been quoted a gearbox overhaul and want it verified
Not all of these have to be present, and one of them on its own can mean something else entirely. That is what the diagnosis is for.
How we do it
Take the history
When the fault started, in which gears, hot or cold, and what work was done before it appeared, are all recorded.
Check fluid first
Level, colour and smell are checked at the correct temperature, because fluid explains a large share of complaints.
Scan and road test
Codes and live data are logged on the road in the exact conditions where you experience the problem.
Rule out external causes
Engine misfire, worn mounts, drive shafts and linkage are checked, as each can feel exactly like a gearbox fault.
Report with evidence
You receive the findings, the data behind them, and a repair quote, with no work starting until you agree.
